There is no denying that the vast majority of older cars with higher mileage have undergone sheet metal repairs. How much should the factory paint thickness be?
The thickness of paint in new cars is about 80-160 μm. A value of less than 80 μm means that the car is most probably after painting, more than 160 μm informs the factory paint about it. In the case of a result above 500 micrometers we are dealing with a large amount of putty on the tested element.

There are two types of devices on the market designed for measuring the thickness of paint – magnetic and mechanical. The first models are cheaper products, and one unnecessary movement in their case results in inaccuracy of measurement. Mechanical meters are precise devices, but on the other hand, they are much more expensive than their magnetic counterparts.

accuracy of measurement – among the products available on the market, the accuracy of the meter is up to 10 microns, however, there are models with the accuracy of measurement even up to 1 micron.
Probe or wire gauge?
Measuring with a built-in probe meter is about putting the device on the body, the test can be done with one hand, although in this case it is difficult to measure hard-to-reach places. Models with a cable probe take more accurate measurements by precisely sticking the probe to the sheet metal.
