More and more cars drive on American roads every year. Despite this growth, we are still far behind the richer European countries. Until two decades ago, most of us went to school or work on foot or by bike. Today, fewer and fewer people are moving in this way. Anyone who plans to buy a first car wonders whether it is worth it at all.
Having a car certainly has many advantages. We can move quickly, we are independent, we can come back at any time, which can not be done using public transport. We do not have to wait at bus stops or suffer from bad weather. Having a car we spend less on shoes and doctors because we avoid colds. In the case of certain cars, their possession is also associated with social prestige.
However, there are also numerous drawbacks. A car is a cost: insurance, repairs, fuel, tyre replacement, washing, parking lots, garage, fines. You also have to take into account the problems with parking and constant fear of theft. Driving a car is not always fast, we often stand in traffic jams and get nervous about the sluggishness of others. Finally, driving a car exposes us to road accidents.
